Lewis Dey Support Recipient

Lewis Dey is a junior rider from Moray who has been making his mark in time trialling in the North this year. Jim Scobie from Deer Management Ltd and HiVelo have combined to make it possible for Lewis to realise his most immediate ambition, which is to experience track racing. We are very grateful for the involvement of Jim, a cyclist who raced in the North some time ago. He was a good friend of the late Ivor Reid who was a multiple British Masters champion in his age group, and Jim wanted to personally mark Ivor’s passing in a tangible way. He still keeps his eye on the racing results and was interested in doing something to benefit young riders. Though now resident in the south of Scotland he maintains his interest in the racing activity up here and, in memory of Ivor, has a desire to assist a young rider whose progress he can follow, encourage, and help take the next step in their chosen sport of cycling. We are delighted to facilitate this.

Lewis has had many excellent results in time trials where his times have resulted in him becoming Scottish Junior Best all Rounder champion for 2022. The championship is based on a rider’s best 10 and 25 mile time trial times. He has been regularly winning the junior prize in local time trials and is starting to take a step up to the next level of racing.

Lewis’s desire to try track cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in Glasgow involved persuading his Dad to be driver, and Peter Ettles, who has the track experience, to be his mentor. With all four track accreditation sessions completed he has is now going to Track League where he has been winning promotion through the groups. At the time of writing, after four rounds, he is sitting 3rd in group B, a step away from competing with the best senior track riders in Scotland. An important upcoming event for him is the Scottish Senior Track Championships starting on 18th December at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome, a challenging test for a junior rider still in his track racing apprenticeship, and a great learning experience.

HiVelo, Deer Management Ltd’s partner in this support, uses its Ivor Reid fund to specifically support riders, under 21, to experience track riding at the velodrome in Glasgow. The HiVelo money was donated by Ivor’s many friends following his untimely death.

As well as backers and mentors, an enthusiastic vehicle driver is also a bonus for young riders who wish to spread their sporting wings, have new experiences, and enjoy the camaraderie of our great sport. Take a bow, dad, Kenny Dey.
